Item Open Access Evaluation of the bioremediation potentials of Abatoir wastes on oil contaminated soil(Federal University of Technology, Owerri, 2016-05) Ogbu, Chris IkeokwuAgricultural farmlands in an oil producing/prospecting area have been known to give poor yield of farm products. Therefore the remediation of the soil for improved agricultural productivity is necessary. Soil samples from this area were studied and standard methods of analysis were applied in evaluating the soil as ‘non oil contaminated”, ‘oil spilled”, and ‘Abattoir waste treated” soil samples. The pH was slightly acidic (5.20) before remediation and after remediation a pH of 8.20 was obtained. The Moisture Content was 8.25% initially and was later obtained as 12.91% after remediation. The concentration in mg/Kg of Nitrogen (N), Potassium (K), Phosphorus (P), Total Organic Carbon (TOC), Total Organic Matter (TOM)] and Total Hydrocarbon Content (THC) were 1.51, 2.15, 538, 25.74, 44.50 & 16160 respectively, while after remediation the values were 2.88, 16.71,.1890, 39.04, 67.50, 6071 respectively for treated soils. A ten weeks investigation on the biodegradation of spilled oil revealed 62.43% reduction in Total Hydrocarbon Content (THC) value of the treated soil and 15.34% reduction in THC from the non-treated soil and also showed an enhanced soil restoration for other parameters. Three kinetic models of zero-order, first-order and second-order equations gave good applicability to K and THC, while the first-order and second-order were applicable to P. However, none of the models were appropriate in the description of the kinetics of N, TOC and TOM.
